2020 Mock Draft - House Cleaned Bored Edition

I performed the mock draft below using FanSpeak.com I added my personal views of each player. I understand that the mocks change almost daily based on evaluation and the performance of teams, but I wanted to see what would unfold based on current projected draft standings with no trades in the mock. I know that the first pick would be extremely controversial and probably signal that the current status quo on offense would be changing, but I wanted to see how things went with my selection, and to also see what thoughts anyone else had if we went this route in the 2020 NFL Draft. Please comment as you see fit on things that I can do better in my evaluations, picks and/or prose in any potential future mock drafts or other posts.

QB JUSTIN HERBERT

OREGON

Currently sitting with 2,329 passing yards and 24 TDs to 2 interceptions, if Herbert was available at 11 overall would he be something to consider for the Detroit Lions? With Matthew Stafford having back injuries the previous two years, and finally being forced to sit out a game for the first time since 2009 this decision could be wise to make.

At 6’6" tall and 237lbs Herbert fits the prototypical size that most coaches and coordinators covet in their future franchise QBs. While the rushing stats don’t scream dual threat, Herbert has proven in the past that he is mobile enough in the pocket to avoid sacks, which is something he would have to do behind the weakened offensive line by making this pick over other potential draft options.

I’m not advocating trading Stafford, he would still remain our starter, but Herbert could be worth grabbing for the future, and with Stafford being so beat up the past two seasons, Herbert would be an upgrade over any backup options available on the market.

DL RAEQUAN WILLIAMS

MICHIGAN STATE

Raequan isn’t the EDGE rusher that the Lions so desperately need, but there are holes along the DL that need fixed also. A’Shawn Robinson is a free agent after the conclusion of the season, and we shouldn’t take it for granted that he will be resigned by or want to resign with the Lions.

Raequan is a big body that could fill that gap if A’Shawn signs with a different team this coming offseason. While not historically a pass rusher, Raequan can finish off the QB if he gets him within his grasp.

RB TRAVIS ETIENNE

CLEMSON

Another 3rd round running back, and very unlikely that Travis Etienne falls this far come draft day, but in the mock this go round he did so I snapped him up quickly.

Travis has something the running back room lacks - SPEED, he hits the hole hard and fast as evidenced by his long rushes throughout his college career. He has also displayed a nose for the endzone, scoring double digit TDs in 2017, 2018, and 2019 with 24 in 2018. I believe he would be an excellent starter, with Kerryon Johnson providing a change of pace, relief back - something I think he would excel at given his injury concerns.

Travis would give the Lions a fallback option as well, instead of having to rely on the patchwork options at RB we have witnessed since Kerryon was placed on IR.

LB JACOB PHILLIPS

LSU

Not as familiar with Jacob Phillips as I am with BIG10 players, even though I currently live in SEC country. In the videos available, I see a LB that plays with speed and intensity. I didn’t see many missed tackles and he appears to be capable rusher. He looks to play sideline to sideline well and has good closing speed. My biggest concern is after reviewing tape he appears to be very similar to Jarrad Davis.

OT SAAHDIQ CHARLES

LSU

Not familiar with Saahdiq Charles at all. In this exercise he was the highest graded tackle available and I believe that the Lions will grab an OT at some point in the draft. His size is decent for a RT, and with Ed Orgeron not specifying why he missed the Georgia Southern game earlier this year I don’t have anything to go on for potential character issues.

He appears to have some pedigree, being an All-SEC selection as a freshman in 2017, Starting 19 games prior to 2019 with 17 of them at left tackle.

LB ZACH BAUN

WISCONSIN

As a Michigan fan I am always watching Wisconsin linebackers for their potential transition to the NFL. As they have sent several high caliber defensive players to the NFL in the past.

Zach Baun is currently having a stellar 2019 with 7.5 sacks.

He could fill a rush role in the Lions defense, although he might be undersized for that role at 6’3" and 235lbs.
