Wednesday open thread: Who’s to blame for the Lions’ defensive struggles?

New, comments

The Lions have been a mess defensively, and it’s time to start making scapegoats out of it.

The Lions were a mess on the defensive side of the ball Sunday, continuing a worsening trend that has taken place over the last several weeks. With the trade deadline past us and with Lions defenders dropping like flies due to injury, it doesn’t look like there’s much room for improvement from a personnel standpoint this season. That leaves the improvement to come from a schematic standpoint.

Question of the day: Who’s to blame for the Lions’ defensive struggles?

My answer: Matt Patricia

Whether or not you believe Patricia’s claim on Monday that Paul Pasqualoni is calling the plays (and will continue doing so), this blame lands squarely in Patricia’s lap.

Matt Patricia was brought here to be a defensive galaxy brain the way he was in New England, but right now every Lions fan cringes the moment the opponent gets the ball. It doesn’t matter if Pasqualoni really is calling the defense or not, Patricia is the head coach and works hand in hand with Bob Quinn to supply the personnel for Patricia’s team.

Two years in, Patricia has to do better.

Your turn.
