Football is a completely different sports breed that can really test your emotions and fandom on a week-to-week basis. The stakes are higher, the emotions are amplified, and the overreactions are in full flight.
The last time I was selected to pick “Song of the Game,” the Lions were coming hot off of their last minute loss to the Chiefs. A lot of fans were surprisingly in pretty good spirits despite the loss, feeling as if the Lions put up a great fight against an elite team. Well, that might have been the case, but a loss is a loss, and it sure as heck hurts now.
Fast forward four games and many fans are already phoning it in for the season, and I can’t say I blame them. I drank the kool-aid, bought in, whatever you want to call it, and now I feel like a damned fool.
Lions - Raiders Week 9 Song of the Game: “A Place Where You Belong” by Bullet For My Valentine
Bullet For My Valentine is admittedly one of my guilty pleasures. The emo lyrics and epic guitar riffs bring me back to my high school days. There were a lot of songs to choose from with this band. Nearly every song can be categorized in some form of pain or heartbreak, and that vibes with how I currently feel about this Lions team.
Your body’s cold
Hope is lost I can’t let go
The Lions’ chances are all but dead and hope is hard to come by. Sure, they could go 7-1 in their final eight games and make a run at the playoffs, but who really believes that’s going to happen with the way the defense is performing right now? Certainly not me.
Ironically, I feel a lot more at ease now that the Lions’ playoff hopes are nearly diminished. Watching this team take each game to the final minutes gives me serious anxiety, but I’d absolutely take it back if it ever translates to wins.
So just kill me now and let the good times roll
Song of the Game is an opportunity for our staff to express their weekly feelings of being a Lions fan, but through the art of song. Each week, we’ll provide a song that perfectly encapsulates the Lions’ game and how we experienced it. By the end of the year, we’ll have a full Spotify playlist telling the story of the 2019 Detroit Lions season.
