Detroit Lions approval poll: Head coach Matt Patricia (November 2019)

It’s been over a month and a half since we checked in on the approval rates of Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia. Safe to say, things have changed a bit since then.

When we last left him, it was October 8 and the Lions were sitting at 2-1-1 at the bye week. Morale and confidence was at its peak during the Patricia era, as many viewed their near-win against the Kansas City Chiefs as evidence this team had not only taken a big step from last year, but may even be considered contenders as early as this season.

But things took a very quick turn for the worse out of the bye week. The Lions won a combined one game in October and November, and not only is any feeling of optimism now gone, but now Patricia is being talked about as a candidate to lose his job completely, only in Year 2 of his tenure.

It would be one thing to lose eight of their last nine, but the method in which they lost is what really has drawn all the negative attention towards Patricia. Detroit’s defense—which was supposed to be Patricia’s specialty—is arguably the worst in the league and has made teams like Washington and Chicago look competent on offense.

Still, a small amount of fans are encouraged about the team’s ability to compete in every game this season. They’ve held a lead in every single game, and some fans point to the massive amount of injuries to key positions (quarterback, defensive line) as to the reason for some of the Lions’ struggles.

Before we get into this week’s voting, here is Matt Patricia’s approval rating throughout various times in Detroit.

October 2019: 87 percent approval
December 2018: 24 percent approval
November 2018: 38 percent approval
October 2018: 73 percent approval
June 2018: 77 percent approval
February 2018: 90 percent approval

Now, I know I’m a day late for the November Approval Poll, but I’m guessing not much has changed since Thursday.
