Former Detroit Lions safety Glover Quin joined the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, and was asked to share his thoughts on his former team, now sitting at the bottom of the NFC North at 3-8-1.
“Right now they’re struggling. They’re struggling and it’s not a great situation,” Quin said on the podcast.
Quin is not only concerned about where they are right now, but he thinks under head coach Matt Patricia, they may not be able to fight out of their current rut.
“It’s not a situation where like—I don’t know if they can fight out of it right now, because I don’t know if the love and the like for Patricia’s style makes the players want to fight out of it,” Quin said. “I think they’re to the point to where it’s like, ‘Man, we’re 3-and-8, 9, it’s cold out here. We’ve got four games left. Let’s just get this thing over with.’”
(Interview starts around 30-minutes in)
Quin, a long-time captain and leader for the Lions, spent one year under Patricia in 2018. The team decided to cut him in 2019, and Quin chose retirement shortly thereafter. A month later, Quin admitted that he tried to get out of his contract in Detroit when Patricia showed up.
“I actually tried to get out of my contract going into the season, cause I just I knew it was going to get to this point (where they moved on from me),” Quin said on The Pride Podcast back in February. “I could see it. I knew it was going to happen. I understand the business of football and I knew we were going to get to this point so I was just trying to stop it before it even got started.”
Quin undoubtedly still has a lot of friends in that locker room, seeing as he was a leader for six years in Detroit. However, if there is unrest about Patricia’s methods, the current roster of players aren’t showing it. Just last week, linebacker Devon Kennard said he’s a firm believer in Patricia and, “riding with him till the wheels fall off.” Safety Tracy Walker promised a few weeks ago that he and his teammates will continue to play their balls off.
Whereas last year, there were reports about Patricia being too stern in practices, there haven’t been any rumblings whatsoever this year.
One of Detroit’s problems is their long list of injuries, and Quin was quick to point that out.
“A lot of guys are injured, (Matthew) Stafford is hurt,” Quin said. “They’re playing with their third quarterback. It’s just a lot of stuff going on, and I love those guys. I feel bad for them because I know how much they put into it, how much effort that they put into it. Guys put so much into it and to have a season basically that’s just over like that, it’s so difficult.”
In the end, Quin doesn’t appear to have any ill will towards Patricia personally. He finishes the interview noting that he believes Patricia is “a very nice guy.” However, his previous comments certainly suggest he’s not a firm believer in his process.
