The most exciting part of the offseason is upon us. In the next seven or eight weeks, the Detroit Lions will change around 30 percent of their roster. Through trades, free agency and the NFL Draft, general manager Bob Quinn will be a busy man, and his job may rely upon how well he does.
Detroit is coming off a rough year, and because things haven’t looked all that rosey in the Matt Patricia era, the leash on Quinn and Patricia could be shorter than ever. If Quinn can nail another draft and pull off some free agency moves that he has failed to get done in the past, he could buy at least another year or two in Detroit.
Quinn’s approval from fans has been mixed. For the first two years of his career, it was mostly positive. He’s only had one really bad miss in the NFL Draft, and prior to 2018, his free agency pickups were both aggressive and calculated.
But 2018 was filled with both good and bad. The Lions tried, and failed, to get any tight ends that could provide significant contributions for the season. Then Quinn scored big with the trade of Damon Harrison Sr. And just a week later, he sent away Golden Tate in a move the sent the Lions’ offense spiraling in the final two months of the season.
As a result, Lions fans are pretty lukewarm on their general manager right now.

So before we enter free agency—perhaps the most important free agency of Quinn’s career—let’s take one more survey of where fans are with Quinn. The Lions general manager has done quite a bit of talking lately, giving Detroit an idea of why he made the moves he has made so far.
