We’re nearly a third of the way through our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, where site commentators make the picks for every NFL team that isn’t the Detroit Lions. The Denver Broncos are now on the clock to round out the first round.
DenverLion once again steps into his role as Broncos general manager, and with the 10th overall pick in the POD Community Mock, he has chosen Missouri quarterback Drew Lock. Here is his explanation for the pick:
“Year 3 as the Broncos GM, and I was torn yet again. Last year it was between Josh Rosen and Quinton Nelson. A poll over at Mile High Report (Broncos SB Nation site) settled my lack of decisiveness and led me to take Rosen. The actual pick (Bradley Chubb) had already gone in our POD Community Draft and, quite frankly, any draftnik would be lying if they told you they thought Chubb would be there at 5.
So last year was Rosen and in 2017 I selected Connor Cook (they traded up for Paxton Lynch). Since I’ve been doing the Consensus Mock research this year, the clear leader for the Broncos at No. 10 has been QB Drew Lock of Missouri with 35 percent of the mocks.
And here presented my dilemma; three years as Broncos GM and three QBs? I really didn’t want to do it, but the Broncos really haven’t resolved their QB issues! Lynch washed out and last year’s free-agent QB (Case Keenum) was such a flop, they traded him to Washington this offseason. Then they traded for 34-year-old Joe Flacco with an average annual salary of $21M over the next three years.
The good thing about Flacco’s contract is there isn’t any more dead money involved, so they can cut him without any future salary cap implications. This, combined with Flacco’s age and unimpressive performance in recent years, almost begs for the Broncos to take the best QB they can get and groom him until Flacco no longer makes sense.
So, with Kyler Murray and Dwayne Haskins already gone, the Denver Broncos select Drew Lock, QB, Missouri. Prototypical size, arm strength, and stellar field vision have Lance Zierlein of NFL.com comparing him to Matthew Stafford. The aforementioned grooming will allow him to work on his one weakness: accuracy.”
