The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back picking in the top five. For the prior three seasons, they’ve managed to play their way out of the top 10, but in the previous four years, they have had a top 10 pick, including the first overall pick in 2015.
With questions just about everywhere on their roster, it is up to Pride of Detroit commenter mgolions to use their fifth overall pick wisely in our Community Mock Draft.
So with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 Pride of Detroit Community Mock, mgolions selects Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams for the Bucs. Here’s mgolions’ explanation:
As Tampa Bay GM, we currently have massive holes everywhere on their defense. This offseason, we lost our starting middle linebacker and are looking to move on from Gerald McCoy who didn’t produce at the expected last year. With so few difference makers on the team and with a top-five pick, we need someone who can be an anchor on defense for years to come. Luckily this draft fits with the team’s overall needs and has plenty of top-tier players.
My first choice would have been Devin White to plug up the middle of the defense. With him off the board, I can take Quinnen Williams as an amazing consolation prize. Williams was dominate at Alabama and can replaced McCoy in the middle of defensive line without losing a step. Williams is huge at 6-foot-3 and 303 pounds and is an exceptional athlete. It’s very rare to find a player with his athletic testing as he scored a 9.84 RAS with a 40-yard dash of 4.83, the fifth faster for a player over 300 pounds.
Williams was insanely productive at Alabama with 91 tackles and 19.5 tackles for loss last season. For a 3T position, that level of production is very rare and he will provide an excellent interior pass rush. The biggest concern is that he only started one season, but he was so dominate that it can be overlooked. He can become the next franchise cornerstone for years to come. He still has room to improve, but he already has elite level traits. While there still is a massive hole at linebacker, Williams is too good to pass up on. He will be an instant starter and as the potential to be a perennial all pro.
