The Detroit Lions are on deck in our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft. Two quarterbacks are off the board, and there is plenty of talent still available.
But before Kent Lee Platte can go run up his card for the Lions, he must wait for the Jacksonville Jaguars to make their pick.
Commenter Big.Al is acting as general manager for the Jags, and he’s got a lot of needs to fill so that Jacksonville can bounce back following a very disappointing 2018 season.
So with the seventh pick in the POD Community Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars have selected... Florida offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. Here’s Big.Al with his explanation:
“The Jags overpaid added Nick Foles in free agency to address the QB position and with new OC John DeFilippo that might actually work. Add in that both of the first-round talents at the position are already gone here, and we can write off QB.
So where are the holes on this roster? While the WR corps isn’t great, there are enough pieces to work with, especially once Marqise Lee is fully recovered from his torn ACL. The offense could still use a playmaker, but the offensive line is in need of an upgrade or two. Injuries derailed a unit that was productive in 2017, so at the very least, having someone talented waiting in the wings will be a boon. That said, Jawaan Taylor isn’t going to sit on the bench behind the likes of Will Richardson and Cedric Ogbuehi. He should be able to step in from day 1 and shore up the right side of this OL.
Looking at the board as it fell, I was hoping Quinnen Williams would make it a couple more picks and if he was here at 7, he’d be the pick. I even considered Ed Oliver since he’s basically exactly what the defense is missing in a pass-rushing 3T since Malik Jackson signed with Philadelphia in Free Agency.
Other positions worthy of consideration were OG, FS, TE and/or WR. Marrying positional talent and need with the draft spot, my only other considerations besides Oliver were D.K. Metcalf, Jonah Williams, and T.J. Hockenson. At the end of the day, this defense is good enough to contend if the offense gets its act together, and pass catchers aren’t going to make as big of an impact on the offense if Foles can’t stay upright.”
