Thursday open thread: What is the Lions’ deepest position?

Of all the positions on the Detroit Lions’ roster, which one is the deepest heading into the summer?

Coming into the offseason the Lions had plenty of holes on the roster and few position groups that you could even classify as “deep.” But after free agency and the NFL Draft, the Lions suddenly find themselves with some decent depth across the roster.

As it stands today, the Lions have a few key groups that have pretty solid depth.

  1. Defensive Line
  2. Tight End
  3. Cornerback

I may be hedging a little bit by grouping the entire defensive line together, but after years of little depth to no depth, it’s finally nice to see a solid effort to solidify that group. A starting group of Trey Flowers, Da’Shawn Hand, A’Shawn Robinson, and Damon Harrison Sr. is very strong.

The addition of Flowers this offseason allows Romeo Okwara to go back to a solid rotational player off the bench. And adding Austin Bryant in the draft is another nice depth piece along the defensive line.

The tight end position has been completely overhauled over the last few seasons. Obviously, T.J. Hockenson is the star of the group, but Jesse James, Michael Roberts, Isaac Nauta, and even Logan Thomas have a chance to make an impact this year.

There’s even chatter of three-tight-end sets this season.

Cornerback is a bit of a dark horse in this category. On the surface, it feels like it’s Darius Slay and everybody else, but as you look deeper you can see the potential for solid depth.

Adding Justin Coleman was a bit of surprise during free agency, but he should be able to lock down the starting nickel spot. The Lions also brought in Rashaan Melvin and Amani Oruwariye this offseason to go along with an improving Teez Tabor and healthy Jamal Agnew.

What do you think is the Lions’ deepest position?

I’m going to with the defensive line. If those guys can stay healthy throughout the season it could be one of the better units across the NFL.

What do you think? Which one of the groups above are the Lions’ deepest position? Or do you think it’s another group all-together?
