Someone’s gotta win the backup job. But who?

Yesterday we posed the question: Is Josh Johnson the answer at backup quarterback?

You all answered with a resounding “No.”

That leaves us with an interesting dilemma because there are only so many options that the Lions have, and none of them may be any good.

I don’t think any of us really know what the Lions are getting out of Tom Savage despite looking fairly strong throughout camp. His brain injury could potentially leave him off the Lions roster completely when cuts are announced in a few weeks.

Josh Johnson looked pretty bad against the Texans in the second week of the preseason, but he was coming off of only a few days of practice. Still, that leaves little to get excited about. He’s going to have to show significant improvements this week if he wants any shot at the backup job behind Matthew Stafford.

And then there’s David Fales. He was disastrous in Week 1 of the preseason, but played much better the following week.

Unlike last year when Matt Cassel was the hands-down favorite to win the backup job, this season it’s much more up in the air. Any of those three guys could win the job and it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me.

So, that leads me to today’s question:

Who should be the Lions backup quarterback?

My answer: Tom Savage

To me it’s pretty simple. Savage has two big things going for him despite his current injury.

  • Familiarity with quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan
  • NFL starting experience

But what do you think? Let us know below:
