Wednesday open thread: Will the Detroit Lions keep three quarterbacks?

Tom Savage’s return from injury likely means he reclaims the backup job, but will his injury history prompt the Lions to keep a third quarterback?

After Week 1 of the preseason, it seemed like the Lions’ backup quarterback woes of years recent had finally come to an end. Tom Savage, who fell short of expectations in Houston but is still a decent quarterback nonetheless, made the most of his brief appearance with the Lions offense.

It was brief, however, because he suffered (at least) the third concussion of his career—and they haven’t been mild ones. The fact that the Lions brought in Josh Johnson told us that this one wasn’t mild either, and heading into the fourth week of the preseason, Savage has only recently returned.

Thus, even with Savage back, the Lions will have to be cognizant of his concussion history when it comes to building the roster, right?

Question of the day: Could the Lions keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster?

My answer: No, but it’s not impossible.

Perhaps if Josh Johnson really showed out and Savage got healthy they’d keep three. However, with Johnson faltering in his first impression with the Lions, the talent simply isn’t there to warrant a third quarterback on the 53-man roster.

The Lions did bring in former Los Angeles Rams quarterback and AAF star Luis Perez, however. I would totally expect the Lions to keep him around, and perhaps if he plays really well in Week 4 of the preseason, put him on the 53-man roster. As Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett noted, Perez is eligible for the practice squad, so that’s very much an option if he looks good over the next week.

Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia are too smart to ignore the red flags should Savage recover fully and reclaim the backup job, and while it may not be in the form of a 53-man roster spot, I think they will have contingencies in place.

Your turn.
