According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, the Detroit Lions are waiving linebacker Garret Dooley.

Dooley was signed with little fanfare and less expectations to the Lions practice squad back in October 2018. He had a surprisingly good training camp in 2019, however, receiving a solid volume of first and second-team reps due to early injuries in camp, and he held his own throughout.

The injury to Jarrad Davis made Dooley a possible keeper going into the season, but his release likely means he just wasn’t able to show enough special teams value to make him a game day active reserve.

This could potentially bode well for Anthony Pittman, Malik Carney or Steve Longa, who are still currently on the roster. But there likely won’t be much room on the roster for more than one of those players, even with Davis’ injury.
