The Detroit Lions are waiving seventh-round draft pick Isaac Nauta, according to the tight end’s agent.
Nauta had a hot start to training camp, but late struggles apparently caused him to miss out on the final roster, despite scoring a touchdown in the preseason finale on Thursday.
Nauta was drafted in the seventh-round just a few months ago, as the Lions openly admitted they thought he was a steal that late in the draft. Nauta didn’t measure out greatly, but his tape was promising enough for a shot.
Nauta is a great candidate to make practice squad, should he pass through waivers unclaimed.
It seems likely at this point the Lions will roll with just three tight ends: T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas. However, there is still an outside chance Jerome Cunningham makes the final squad, as he’s been active on special teams throughout the preseason.
