In one of the more surprising moves of the day, the Detroit Liosn have waived wide receiver Brandon Powell, according to the Detroit News.

The Lions made it clear they wanted Powell to be an integral part of the offense. Training camp and the preseason saw him featured in everything from running routes to taking jet sweep handoffs up the middle. His abilities as a gadget player were good, but his lack of elite athleticism was likely his downfall.

Jermaine Kearse’s injury kept Powell’s WR5/6 hopes alive for a few more weeks, Powell couldn’t produce enough to warrant a roster spot. While he has some quickness and burst, Powell lacks long speed and that limits a gadget player’s potential if and when they reach open space.

Powell’s strong finish to the preseason wasn’t enough to save him, and now it’s looking more and more likely that Chris Lacy and, potentially, Travis Fulgham may have won themselves a job.

Additionally, the Lions have waived linebacker Anthony Pittman.
