Monday open thread: Are the Lions good enough to win the NFC North?

In a difficult division, do the Lions have what it takes to claim the crown?

NFL: Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The NFC North has been one of the toughest divisions in the NFL for many years now, and the Lions are looking to finally to claim the division title in 2019. However, there remains a lot of competition, and 2019 is shaping up to be a toss-up.

Every single team claims to have improved over the offseason. The question is whether they invested in fool’s gold or acquired the pieces needed to succeed. The Lions are no exception, and they’re looking quite promising on paper. A multitude of talented players were added to the defense, with Trey Flowers and Mike Daniels being the crown jewels of the offseason. Coupled with talent added in the draft, there’s excitement for arguably one of the better defensive lines in the league.

Meanwhile on offense, the offseason has resulted in more of a refurbish than a rebuild. The core of the team, Matthew Stafford, remains at the helm, but his surrounding cast has received a few noteworthy changes. The Lions have actual starting-caliber tight ends this season in T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James, and the likes of C.J. Anderson and Danny Amendola aim to provide more options on offense. There’s a lot of optimism this season after a down 6-10 campaign the year before.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Are the Lions good enough to win the NFC North in 2019?

My answer: I believe they are good enough to win the division.

The problem, however, is that there are three other teams also capable of winning the division. As I mentioned earlier, I believe the NFC North is a toss-up this season. You could make a fair argument for any team.

Can the Bears win the division? Yes. After a solid 12-4 season compounded by an all-time great defense, it’s quite possible that they repeat as division champions. I’m predicting a regression from them, especially given my doubts surrounding Mitchell Trubisky, but they’re still a well-coached team with plenty of talent.

Can the Vikings win the division? Yes. Their 2018 season was a disappointment, but they’re far better than an 8-7-1 team. They have had an excellent defense for multiple seasons, and their offense features two star receivers, a solid running back, and a quarterback that doesn’t get enough appreciation. They’re my pick to win the division.

Can the Packers win the division? Yes. Despite injuries and a depleted offense the previous few seasons, the Packers will always be a threat with Aaron Rodgers. I’m not sold on their defense, but they have some promising young pieces and, coupled with a lot of solid free agent signings, I expect them to rebound from 6-9-1.

All in all, I honestly don’t know what to expect from the 2019 season. I’m pretty happy with how the Lions are looking on paper, but the NFC North is looking like a grudge match. The division crown could come down to Week 17. Here’s hoping the Lions can break their streak.

Your turn.
