The Detroit Lions don’t pull out the throwback uniforms often, and when they do, it’s usually for a special occasion like Thanksgiving or a nationally-televised game.
However, the Lions are pulling the throwbacks out a little early this year, as they host the Kansas City Chiefs this week in a battle of undefeated teams:
We’re bringing out the throwbacks in honor of our #Fantennial game against the Chiefs! #NFL100

As noted by the Lions’ social media post, the reasoning is because Sunday is the team’s “Fantennial” game, part of the league’s 100-year celebration in 2019. This week will feature a lot of special events in the lead up to what the Lions are calling their “Homecoming Game” against the Chiefs.
Here are just a few of the special events planned:
- Friday, September 27: Detroit Lions High School Game of the Week: Royal Oak vs. Madison Heights
Saturday, September 28: Pride plaza tailgate from 1-6 p.m. ET featuring food trucks, locker room sale, live music and appearances from Lions legends. (Located on Brush Street)
- Gameday: Lions’ All-Time team to be revealed at halftime.
