On Thursday afternoon, Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia announced the seven players that would serve as captain for the 2019 season, as voted by the team.
Matthew Stafford, Taylor Decker, Danny Amendola, Jarrad Davis, Devon Kennard, Quandre Diggs, and Don Muhlbach were all voted into the leadership positions for the season.
Stafford, Davis, Kennard and Muhlbach were all among Detroit’s seven captains last year, while two of the three from 2018 are no longer with the team (T.J. Lang and Glover Quin). The third, Marvin Jones Jr., was not named a captain this year.
There are a few interesting developments among this year’s captains. First, Taylor Decker being named a captain shows that he’s taken a leadership role among a fairly young offensive line unit. Additionally, it’s clear that Quandre Diggs has taken over as the seasoned veteran in the secondary, assuming Quin’s role from last year.
Finally, it’s interesting to see Danny Amendola already take on a leadership role in his first year with the team. He is the only player new to the team this year that was named a captain.
