Tuesday open thread: How do you feel about the Lions hiring of Cory Undlin?

Detroit hired a new defensive coordinator on Monday, so how’re you feelin’ on Tuesday?

On Monday, the Detroit Lions moved on their man and hired Cory Undlin to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

Former defensive backs coach, most recently for the Philadelphia Eagles, Undlin entered the league in 2004 when he was hired by the—wait for it—the New England Patriots! He got his start as a defensive assistant the same year Matt Patricia was hired by New England to be an offensive assistant.

Since then, Undlin has put together a rather impressive resume, primarily as a defensive backs coach. He was employed by the Denver Broncos from 2012 through 2014, a period in which Denver had one of the better secondaries in all of football, headlined by players like Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib. He was also the Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach for their victory in Super Bowl LII.

With all of this in mind, let’s get to today’s question of the day...

How do you feel about the Lions hiring of Cory Undlin?

It’s a mixed bag for me, and I’ll tell you why.

First and foremost, this really feels like Patricia hitting the reset button on another yes-man to fill the defensive coordinator vacancy. It feels like a retread of the same Paul Pasqualoni-type hire that resulted in the Lions having one of the worst defenses in the NFL. So yes, it certainly does feel like there’s some good ol’ nepotism at play here.

But on the other side, it seems by all accounts that Undlin is a very well-respected coach in the NFL, especially by players in the Eagles locker room. If Jim Schwartz wasn’t going to be the Eagles defensive coordinator any longer, Undlin was apparently the guy players wanted to take on that role.

Your turn.
