Detroit Lions fans are bumming. If that wasn’t already abundantly clear to you, let me use some data to support my case.
Earlier in the week, just nine percent of fans in our SB Nation Reacts survey pool believed in the direction the team was headed. Even worse, only seven percent of Lions fans approve of the job general manager Bob Quinn is doing, according to our poll of over 2,000 people this week.
At the face of all this pessimism is head coach Matt Patricia. He current ranks third all time in the worst win percentage in Lions history. His defense continues to be one of the worst in the league and only seems to be trending in the wrong direction. And now he’s making headlines with curious press conference moments—first dismissing criticism of his defensive acumen by referencing one five-year-old play, then by insulting (perhaps not intentionally) the Lions’ 2017 team by saying he inherited a team that needed a lot of work.
Ultimately, though, the team is just bad, and the head coach is always going to take the brunt of the blame for that.
If we look at past approval polls of Matt Patricia, a trend is clear. Early in the season, the Lions have been playing well—perhaps even picking up a signature win or two. But by the time midseason hits, the losses come rolling in and the confidence in shot.
November 2019: 22 percent approval
October 2019: 87 percent approval
December 2018: 24 percent approval
November 2018: 38 percent approval
October 2018: 73 percent approval
June 2018: 77 percent approval
February 2018: 90 percent approval
This year, it’s an entirely different beast. The Lions are 1-3, do not have any true signature wins, and don’t appear to be improving in any facet. The walls are closing in, and now in Year 3 of his reign, Patricia has lost the patience of his fanbase.
So for the month of October 2020, it’s time to gauge Matt Patricia’s approval rate. VOTE:
