Lions Thursday injury report: Frank Ragnow downgraded to no practice, Adrian Peterson sits with non-COVID illness

The Lions could be missing two key players on offense this week.

Chicago Bears v Detroit Lions

Just as it appeared the Detroit Lions were nearing full health on the offensive line, one of the best players on that unit may be dealing with an injury that will threaten his playing status for Sunday. Center Frank Ragnow sat out of Thursday’s practice with a groin injury that popped up on the injury report the day before.

Head coach Matt Patricia wasn’t clear on whether the injury was sustained before this week or during Wednesday’s practice, but given that Ragnow was limited the previous day, it seems safe to say that this is an injury suffered during practice.

That means there’s a good chance Detroit will have to fill his spot on the offensive line. Though the Lions don’t have a clear backup, they do have several players who are capable of filling in. Second-year offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel is currently on the practice squad, but has been repping as the team’s backup center since late last year. Joe Dahl—currently on IR—is practicing again a could be another replacement if Detroit decides to take him off the injury list this week. Even rookie Jonah Jackson could play center, as he took some reps there during training camp.

Additionally, the Lions added Adrian Peterson to the injury report with an illness. This kept him out of practice Thursday, but according to several local beat reporters, this illness is not COVID-19 related. His status for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is unclear.
