There’s a pretty good chance before this week is through, Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift is going to see some national recognition for his performance in Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’s already off to a big lead in our Week 6 Game Ball polls, and now he’s up for national NFL award.
Swift is one of three nominees for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week. This award is given to the best rushing performances of the week based on fan vote.
Against the Jaguars, Swift totaled 116 yards on just 14 carries (8.3 YPC) and found the end zone twice. Currently, those 116 rushing yards rank third for Week 6, behind Derrick Henry (212 yards) and Miles Sanders (118).
It’s hard to see Swift winning the award this week considering Henry’s dominant performance (22 carries, 212 yards, 9.6 YPC, 2 TDs) against the Texans. However there’s a good chance this isn’t the only weekly award Swift will earn a nomination for.
Later in the week, the NFL will announce five Offensive Rookie of the Week candidates, and you have to imagine Swift will have a shot at that. He’ll have stiff competition with Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson (9 catches, 166 yards, 2 TDs) and Bengals receiver Tee Higgins (6 catches, 125 yards), but he’ll still have a good chance to come away with that.
