For the second time in five weeks, Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift is up for the NFL’s Pepsi Rookie of the Week award.
In Week 10, Swift combined for 149 total yards and a touchdown against the Washington Football Team. Despite going against one of the better defensive lines in the league, Swift rushed for a very efficient 5.1 yards per carry on 16 rushes. He also added five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Perhaps most notably, Swift was one of the main contributors to the Lions offense in crunch time. With the game tied at 24 in the fourth quarter, the Lions put together an 11-play drive to re-take the lead with just over 2:30 left in the game. On the first seven plays of that drive, Swift touched the ball six times for 45 yards.
Mind you, this was in his first career NFL start, too.
While back in Week 6, Swift didn’t end up winning Rookie of the Week, this week he has a legitimate shot. Here are the other players nominated:
Bengals WR Tee Higgins: 7 catches, 115 yards, 1 TD
Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa: 15-of-25 for 169 yards, 2 TDs
Browns LT Jedrick Wills Jr.: Helped Cleveland run for 231 yards on the day
Vikings WR Justin Jefferson: 8 catches, 135 yards
Statistically speaking, it appears Swift has the edge over his competition. And when you look at his highlights from Week 10, it’s hard not to go with the hometown hero.
