It turns out Matthew Stafford did not practice at all on Wednesday, despite head coach Matt Patricia saying earlier in the day that Stafford would be out there. Though the Lions quarterback was present at practice, he did not go through any drills and was officially listed as “no practice” on Detroit’s injury report for Wednesday.
Stafford told media on Wednesday that he’ll try to make his way onto the field this week, but has to see how the week plays out.
“We’ll see,” Stafford said about his availability this week. “Just trusting what our docs say, what our trainers do to help get me as good as I can, and we’ll see.”
When asked if he was confident if he’d play this week, Stafford gave a very non-committal answer.
“I’m just going to take it day-by-day. Try to see how it heals, how it feels throughout the week and go from there.”
Joining Stafford on the sidelines was his top two receivers for the 2020 season: wide receivers Marvin Jones Jr. and Danny Amendola. Jones is listed with a knee injury, but he played through the entire game on Sunday. Amendola, on the other hand, had to leave the game early with a hip injury.
However, the Lions receiving corps did get some help with Kenny Golladay returning to practice for the first time in a couple of weeks. Golladay is still listed as limited with his hip injury, but it’s a big first step towards potentially playingt his week against the Panthers. It’s also worth noting that the Lions did add Mohamed Sanu to the practice squad last week, so Detroit would be covered if Amendola and Jones don’t progress throughout the week.
The only other new injury is that of defensive end Austin Bryant, who sat on Wednesday with a thigh injury.
Here’s the full report from Wednesday.

As for the Panthers, they’ve thrown competitive advantage to the wind, and head coach Matt Rhule has already indicated a few players he doesn’t expect to play this week, including running back Christian McCaffrey.
Matt Rhule says they expect Donte Jackson, Christian McCaffrey and Russell Okung to all be out Sunday.
