This Super Bowl feels like no other in recent memory. There is no clear Patriots-like villain amongst the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams haven’t seen a ton of recent success. The Chiefs haven’t been to a Super Bowl in 50 years, while the 49ers are in the playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Okay, maybe there’s a little difference there, but San Francisco hasn’t won a title in 25 years, so there still is some serious drought on that side.
Each team has extremely likable characters, whether it’s perennial MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes or underdog story George Kittle. They’ve both got head coaches that are highly respected and looking to put some of their past embarrassments behind them. Andy Reid still somehow doesn’t have a title despite earning a winning season in 18 of 21 years coaching, while Kyle Shanahan is undoubtedly still shaking off 28-3 nightmares.
So when it comes to Super Bowl LIV, there isn’t a clear “good guy” vs. “bad guy” dynamic. Which leads to today’s Question of the Day:
Who are you rooting for in Super Bowl LIV?
My answer: As a Detroit Lions fan, there’s nothing really to sway me one way or the other. Some may be annoyed by the fact that the 49ers have a bunch of Lions cast-offs, both on their coaching staff/front office and their player personnel. But that doesn’t really matter to me. Some may want the Chiefs to win, because it would somehow make them feel better about the Lions taking them to the limit back in Week 4.
But for me, the difference really is Kyle Shanahan. His offensive designs are extremely fun to watch, and I feel like I learn something new about the game every time I see a unique play . This feels different than Sean McVay in the past couple years. This feels truly unique, and perhaps most importantly, he’s been doing it for several years now. This 49ers team is extremely fun to watch on both sides of the ball, and I like it when fun teams win.
Also, I really, really like being right, so the fact that I picked the 49ers in my On Paper preview is probably playing a role in my preferences.
Your turn.
