Friday open thread: Which NFC North quarterback will have the best 2020?

There are four teams but only three options.

It takes a complete roster to win in the NFL, but without a solid quarterback teams have little chance for success. The Detroit Lions were a living example of that in 2019, struggling to do almost anything once Matthew Stafford went out. There were other issues with the roster, of course, but without their starting quarterback, the Lions completely fell apart.

With Stafford back healthy, Detroit will have a fighting chance in 2020. Not only does this take a backup-level player out of the team’s most important position, but it restores what some consider to be a top-10 quarterback into the starting lineup. NFL.com ranked each quarterback to start a game last season and had some lofty placements for the NFC North signal callers:

  • Aaron Rodgers — 7th
  • Kirk Cousins — t-8th
  • Matthew Stafford — t-8th
  • Mitchell Trubisky — t-30th

Today’s question of the day is:

Which NFC North quarterback will have the best 2020?

My answer: It might not be well received on this website, but my belief is that it will be Aaron Rodgers. Look, I am not ignorant to the fact that Rodgers had one of his worst seasons by passer rating, QBR, total touchdowns, and a bunch of other metrics in 2019. However, at 36 years old, he still had a few good seasons left in him, and his track record is hard to deny. Even his down season saw him throw for 26 scores and finish as a top-10 quarterback according to Pro Football Focus.

I would put Stafford second on this list, assuming his health is at 100 percent. His talent has sometimes gone under the radar, but both the NFL.com list and Pro Football Focus gave him top-10 accolades. It would be great for him to outplay Rodgers, and if we expand the time frame to more than a couple years then of course he would be the pick, but for now I still find him a tier below.

Kirk Cousins does not impress me that much, although he seems capable of doing just enough with the slew of weapons placed around him. His stats rank favorably to the other two, but much of that is due to the system in which he plays. As for Mitchell Trubisky... nothing really needs to be said.

Your turn.
