By now, the Detroit Lions have made their stance on Matthew Stafford’s future with the team abundantly clear. Ever since Bernie Smilovitz of WDIV in Detroit reported that the Lions were shopping Stafford, Detroit has done everything to deny said rumors. General manager Bob Quinn immediately texted everyone in his rolodex that the rumors were 100 percent untrue. He then reportedly told Stafford himself, “We’re not trading you, period.”
But just in case that wasn’t enough denial for you, head coach Matt Patricia joined NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” this week from the NFL Combine and put the 203rd nail in this rumor’s coffin.
“It’s comical to me, to be honest with you,” Patricia said of the Stafford rumors. “Not interested in doing any of that. There’s no conversation of that whatsoever.”
Throw that in with Quinn’s insistence that Stafford is healthy and should be ready to go for offseason workouts, plus all of the other reasons a Stafford trade is completely illogical, and there is really no question who the Lions quarterback will be in 2020. Matthew Stafford will be behind center this season, and Patricia continues to express his unwavering faith and adoration for the franchise quarterback.
“Matt Stafford, I love the guy. He’s one of the reasons I came to Detroit when I was at my previous employment looking at different jobs and opportunities. An opportunity to work with a guy like Matthew Stafford, for me, there’s no question.”
Alright, are we all ready to move on now? Great. Me too.
