Last year the Detroit Lions started free agency out with bang. They ended their first day of legal tampering by adding Danny Amendola, Trey Flowers, Justin Coleman, and Jesse James.
Of that group the biggest overall crush was certainly Trey Flowers. The Lions did a good job of filling gaps through free agency last year with almost everyone in that group playing a significant role last season.
Only James seemed to not mesh in the with offense. For whatever reason he never found his role within the offensive scheme that Darrell Bevell implemented.
Overall, I like what Bob Quinn did to try and fill holes last free agency period. This year, in what is likely a make-or-break season, he’ll need to do it again.
Yesterday we asked for your 2020 NFL draft crush, and you all spoke up. There was a good mix between Isaiah Simmons and Jeff Okudah.
Today we’re looking ahead toward free agency.
Question of the day: Who is your 2020 NFL Free Agent crush?
My answer: Joe Thuney
There are several options along the defensive line that are tempting, but if the Lions are going to be successful at all next year, they have to protect Matthew Stafford. They’ve seemingly given up on Graham Glasgow so it only makes sense to try and fill that hole.
Thuney, like Glasgow is a former third-round pick. The obvious connection is that he was drafted by the Patriots in 2016 while Matt Patricia was still on their staff. But like Flowers before him, the connection might be warranted. Thuney is a superior athlete and is by far one of the better guards in the entire league.
Joe Thuney, who was named 2nd-team Associated Press All-Pro, had a 97% pass-block win-rate, according to ESPN's metric that uses NFL Next Gen Stats to determine which linemen can sustain their blocks for 2.5 seconds or longer.

That is 2nd best among guards (Marshall Yanda, 98%)
My gut wanted to go with a defensive player, but in the end none of them intreaged me as much as Thuney. Although Jeremy Reisman’s piece on D.J. Reader made an excellent case to want to see him in a Lions’ uniform as well.
But what do you all think? Who are you hoping to see in a Lions go get next week?
