Now that the Detroit Lions have somehow landed Chase Young in our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, it’s time to move onto the rest of the first round. Up next is the New York Giants, a team that has their young franchise quarterback in Daniel Jones but could use help just about anywhere else.

General manager Dave Gettleman has been the butts of many jokes, so let’s push him aside for a minute and welcome the new POD general manager of the Giants, stevew_66!

With the fourth overall pick in the POD Community Mock, the Giants have selected Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Here’s stevew_66 with the explanation for the pick.

“With the fourth pick in the POD mock draft, the New York Football Giants select offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs from the University of Iowa. I really planned to take Isaiah Simmons, but he is already off the board. I didn’t expect Chase Young to be available and would have been pissed if Kent passed on him. I also considered Jeff Okudah, but with the Giants signing James Bradberry in free agency, cornerback is less of a need. The Giants’ biggest need is probably an edge rusher, their defense is about as bad as the Lions defense currently. With Young and Simmons gone, I was forced to look elsewhere.

Almost every mock draft I’ve seen has the Giants going offensive tackle. With my top two defensive picks gone, I decided to follow suit. Then the problem was, which OT to take. The early favorite was Andrew Thomas, but he has fallen down the boards. Mekhi Becton was another consideration after an excellent combine. I’ve read too many reviews that say Becton may have to slide in at guard instead of tackle in the NFL. That narrowed it down to Tristan Wirfs and Jedrick Wills.

I went with Wirfs. It was a toss up, honestly. Both played right tackle. Wirfs was a bit faster in the 40-yard dash and shuttle time. On Big Blue View, I saw a few fans had posted mock drafts. All picked Wirfs over Wills. Daniel Jones was beaten like a rag doll behind the current offensive line and fumbled a lot. Even if Wirfs mans the right side in 2020 while Nate Solder plays the left side, this is a serious upgrade. The Ringer says of him, “Agile blocker with massive size, smooth athleticism, and immense strength; mirrors in pass protection and moves people in the ground game.” I think Giants fans, Daniel Jones, and Saquon Barkley will all love that description!
