While nothing is official yet, it seems like the 2020 NFL preseason is on its way to being cancelled. Monday night, the NFL offered up cutting all four preseason games as part of their negotiations with the NFL Players Association, which is something the NFLPA has been pushing for the entire time in order to maintain a slow ramp-up period before the regular season.
And while the safety of the players should absolutely come before everything, there is a sense of loss here from the fan perspective. Sure, the preseason gets pretty boring once the third and fourth string players take the field, and, yes, the fourth preseason game is nearly unwatchable, but there is something to be said about the excitement of seeing players return to the field for the first time since last season’s games.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Will you miss the preseason games?
My answer: I absolutely will.
With the media expected to be extremely limited during training camp, there’s a good chance I won’t get any first-hand exposure to this team if the preseason is cancelled completely. To go into the regular season with absolutely no glimpses of this team beforehand would be a bizarre and, honestly, a bit unsettling.
Part of the fun of preseason and training camp is that we try to pick apart every performance to get even the slightest of notions of how the season will play out. Without that, our predictions feel less informed and there will be considerably less hype going into Week 1.
Or maybe the lack of any preseason games will bring more anticipation to Week 1. I’m not really sure how I’ll feel. But I do know that I’m going to miss that feeling of breaking down every preseason performance in the hopes of finding something interesting for the future.
Your turn.
