In 2019, the Detroit Lions opened their season against the Arizona Cardinals and rookie quarterback Kyler Murray. The Lions roared out to an early lead and held the day until late in the fourth quarter, when Murray led the charge back to erase a 18-point deficit. After a languid overtime, the game ended in a tie.
If that all sounds familiar, it’s because the Lions have failed to hold leads in both of their games in the 2020 NFL season. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray has started the season hot, racking over 500 yards through the air and 120 on the ground, as Arizona have taken wins against Washington and San Francisco.
Now Detroit has to erase their old shame against Murray, and maybe stop taking on water at the same time. If the Lions fail to score a victory here, it’ll further spell doom for head coach Matt Patricia. He has yet to score a victory since late October last year, and the Lions could be seeing their season completely slip away on Sunday—or, if they defeat the Cardinals, might find new life.
