The Lions finally pulled out a win on Sunday. Regardless of the fact that it was a nail-biter, a win is a win, and that’s something head coach of Matt Patricia was in dire need of with 0-4 looking very possible at the bye before the Lions’ victory on Sunday.
Question of the day: What grade would you give Matt Patricia through 3 weeks?
My answer: D
Some might say that Matt Patricia earned this win. By changing up his defensive approach to a balance between man and zone, the Lions were able to limit Kyler Murray on the ground and fool him into three (should’ve been four) interceptions on Sunday.
I say the Lions won in spite of Patricia. The Lions almost choked it away in the second half due to the same conservative philosophy that has been their downfall for too many games recently. Props to the coaching staff for decent clock management, but it shouldn’t have been as close as it was at the end, especially given the absurd number of takeaways by the Lions defense.
Matt Patricia had a firm F in my book, but the first half against the Cardinals showed that, even if he’s reluctant to do it, he knows what’s necessary for the defense to be better. For that he gets bumped to a D, for defense, but he’s still firmly failing in my gradebook.
