Video: Watch Danny Shelton mic’d up vs. Arizona Cardinals

“Let’s whoop ass with a f*cking smile.”

Every NFL game is made better with on-field audio. Hearing the players chatter during games—sometimes about things completely unrelated to football—is one of this game’s unheralded gifts to the fans. Whether it’s a player trying to pump up his teammates or Theo Riddick unconsciously making “woo” noises every time he makes a cut, I get an immense amount of enjoyment any time we’re privy to on-field audio.

The Detroit Lions are continuing their “Sights and Sounds” series this year, and it’s about time we check in with it considering the team just picked up its first win of the season.

In Week 3, defensive tackle Danny Shelton was the man that was mic’d up for Sunday’s game. And while most of Shelton’s audio contributions were simply, “Hell yeah!” exclamation, there is plenty more to take in from this week’s video.

Right off the bat, we’re treated to a couple of the Lions’ captains pumping up the team. First, there’s the amazing line, “Let’s whoop ass with a f*cking smile.”

Then Lions safety Duron Harmon gathers the secondary and makes a prediction.

“We’re not losing today,” Harmon screams. “We’re not [bleepin] losing, and it’s on us.”

Plus there’s neat audio and video of players swarming Jeff Okudah after his first NFL interception, great radio calls from Detroit Lions radio’s Dan Miller, and the team’s reaction to the game-winning field goal.

But nothing tops the very end of the video. An exuberant Shelton, who clearly heard some of the chatter the week before about how bad the team looked, describes his feelings to his nearby teammates by referencing the movie “The Waterboy.”

“Hey remember when the Mud Dogs won the Bourbon Bowl? Yeah, bro, that’s how this shit feels.”
