The Detroit Lions are cutting running back Jonathan Williams, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Williams was added to Detroit’s roster midway through August to help out with the Lions’ injury situation at running back. Bo Scarbrough was dealing with an injury, giving Williams a legitimate chance to compete for the team’s power back role. After a promising start to camp—which even included some first-team reps—Williams started to lose some momentum. He fumbled during the team’s scrimmage, and Scarbrough returned late in camp to take back some of his reps.
This could obviously be good new for Scarbrough, who rushed for 377 yards in six games for the Lions last year. However, there is no guarantee he makes the roster, either, given that the team drafted two running backs this year in D’Andre Swift and Jason Huntley.
The Lions’ roster is now down to 72 players. You can follow all the roster cuts here.
