Report: Lions waiving tight end Isaac Nauta

Another significant surprise.

It looked like when the Detroit Lions decided to waive tight end Matt Sokol that Isaac Nauta’s job would be safe. However, the Lions are waiving him as well, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

This leaves the Lions in a very interesting situation at tight end. At the moment, they have just three on the roster: T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and undrafted rookie Hunter Bryant. That would be just fine in a normal year, but Bryant suffered an injury a couple weeks ago and hasn’t been able to return to practice since. Bryant was looking very good in camp prior to his injury, but he doesn’t appear to be near a return yet.

As for Nauta, it’s quite possible he lands on the practice squad this year. He spent the first couple months of 2019 on the practice squad before the Lions called him up for some fullback time late in the season.
