The Detroit Lions may not have an acting general manager at the moment, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be active in player acquisition.
The Lions announced on Tuesday evening that they have claimed former Washington Football Team linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton off of waivers. Hamilton was a sixth-round pick for Washington in 2018 who has primarily played special teams for the first three years of his career. He has only missed two games in his career, and even played a significant role on defense in 2019, earning a solid 74.8 PFF grade on over 300 snaps. Hamilton is an inside linebacker from Alabama who was waived on Monday.
The Lions’ linebacker group could use a complete overhaul after yet another disappointing season on defense. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Reggie Ragland and Jarrad Davis are all set to become free agents, and the linebackers that remain—Jahlani Tavai, Jamie Collins Sr. and Christian Jones—could all use some competition in the room.
Because Hamilton was claimed off waivers, he’ll remain on his rookie contract, which has one more year remaining in it.
