The New Orleans Saints were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday night after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Normally, that would mean very little for the Detroit Lions, but this year, it’s big news.
With the Saints’ season now over, assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell is now free to pursue any other job opportunities. And every single sign points to Campbell being the Detroit Lions’ next head coach.
On Sunday morning, Ian Rapoport said Detroit was expected to hire him as soon as the team is eliminated from the playoffs. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press said there’s a 99.9 percent chance of it happening. Even Adam Schefter said “Campbell will be the Lions next head coach.” In other words, prepare for the news to officially break soon.
It may not happen Monday, as the Saints will likely take a day or two to clean out their lockers—and it’s also Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But prepare, Detroit. The Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell era is nigh.
