The Detroit Lions will have to find a new quarterbacks coach for the 2021 season. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Sean Ryan is expected to take the quarterbacks coach job with the Carolina Panthers under head coach Matt rhule.

Ryan only spent two season with the Detroit Lions, but he earned a lot of praise of his time. Matthew Stafford was having a career year in 2019 before a back injury shortened his season. Given the circumstances, Ryan also did a pretty good job juggling that quarterback room in 2019, as Detroit shuffled through several options all year, and David Blough and Jeff Driskel did just about as good as could have been expected given each’s circumstances.

If Matthew Stafford ends up staying with the team, he will be under the seventh quarterbacks coach during his career. Here’s a look at the coaches who have held that position since Stafford entered the season back in 2009.

2009: Jeff Horton
2010-13: Todd Downing
2014-15: Jim Bob Cooter
2016-17: Brian Callahan
2018: George Godsey
2019-20: Sean Ryan

New Lions head coach Dan Campbell already has many important decisions he must make regarding the team’s coaching staff. Now add one more job vacancy to the list.
