Last week, we ran an approval poll for the hiring of general manager Brad Holmes. As an up-and-comer with a fantastic resume from the Los Angeles Rams, it was little surprise that the move was widely praised by Detroit Lions fans. With nearly 3,000 votes accounted for, 83 percent of fans approved of the move. And while that number is remarkably similar to the approval that Bob Quinn got days after his hire, it’s still a good indication that even fans as cynical as us can believe the Lions are capable of getting something right every now and then.
I am curious, though, if the same is felt of new head coach Dan Campbell. Given that there were options that were easily more popular—see: Robert Saleh—I would have to imagine this approval poll may not be quite as much of a landslide.
Don’t get me wrong. If you were to judge this hire based solely on the players Campbell has previously coached, it may be a unanimous approval of the poll. After his run as interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins, in which he headed a very bad team to a 5-7 record, players were saying things like this:
Special teamer Michael Thomas:
“I don’t think you could find one player who wouldn’t want him back on this team.”
Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard:
“It would be my honor to play under coach Dan Campbell, a guy that stands for everything he stands for.”
Wide receiver Jarvis Landry:
“Man, I wish we could have played like this all year,”
However, there are major concerns about his style of play. Campbell comes as a motivator, not as an inventor of a brilliant offensive or defensive scheme. In fact, outside of an upbringing alongside NFL coaching legend Bill Parcells, we don’t really know what his football philosophy is at all.
Given today’s NFL trends, many fans were hoping for the latest offensive genius, or someone who has finally found the key to stopping the modern passing attack. Campbell is decidedly not that, but many teams have tried that approach and failed miserably.
So put it all together and what do you get? Do you approve of the Lions’ hiring of Dan Campbell as their next head coach? Vote in the poll below.
