On Monday morning, Kelly Stafford, wife of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford addressed the news that hit over the weekend. Matthew has requested a trade from the Lions, not wanting to go through another rebuild, and the Lions—with their entirely rebuilt front office—are willing to honor that request.
Kelly went to Instagram and clearly acknowledged that the reports are true, and gave a pre-goodbye to the city of Detroit, their home for the past 12 years.
Here’s the full caption:
Thank you. This place, our home, the people... it’s hard to find the words to explain what this place means to me. Random tears come very often when I think about not being here. This place supported me during the toughest time of my life and during the happiest times and I want to thank y’all in the right way. Whenever I figure out what the future holds, you’ll be hearing from me again with a thank you that hopefully shows how much gratitude and love I have for this place.. but until then we are going to enjoy our time left in Michigan to the fullest because there really is no other place like it. #detroitvseverybody #staffordstrong
It’s clear the Stafford family is going to miss the city of Detroit, and if the outpouring of love from fans over the weekend is any indication, that feeling is going to be mutual. The Stafford family gave back a ton to this city, and their relationship with the city—albeit private at times—will always be special.
