It hasn’t been the best season for Detroit Lions kicker Matt Prater, but in Sunday’s finale against the Minnesota Vikings, he made NFL history.
With a 54-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, Prater successful kicked his 59th field goal of 50 yards or longer. That breaks the NFL record previously set by former Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski.
Prater is 6-for-10 from 50+ this season, including a 59-yard game winner against the Washington Football Team back in Week 10. That kick could very well win the city of Detroit some free beer, too.
Of course, this is just one of a few notable NFL records Prater has set in his illustrious 14-year career. His most notable achievement prior to this record is the 64-yard field goal he kicked as a member of the Broncos, still currently the longest field goal made in NFL history.
Prater is set to become a free agent in 2021, but this week he expressed interest in coming back to Detroit.
