We’re waiting.

The season has ended, mercifully, but even before Sunday’s game started, the news of Detroit’s interest in Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider and their covert interview of Marvin Lewis had all the headlines, and subsequently, all the attention of Lions fans.

So I gotta ask the Lions this question...

Detroit Lions Week 17 Song of the Game: “W.Y.G.D.T.N.S.” by The Alchemist

When you gonna drop that new shit?

Everything about this record from super producer The Alchemist is the perfect soundtrack to lead us into an offseason full of changes. It’s light, airy, and teetering on elevator music, but layered with some slightly distorted sounds to foreshadow the chaos of it all. ScHoolboy Q provides the vocals and poses a question charged with the appropriate amount of impatience and excitement on every Lions fans’ mind: When you gonna drop that new shit?

We’re waiting, Rod Wood. When are the Lions getting their next architect to finally build a winning roster? When are the Lions finally getting a head coach they will stick with and stand by as they build themselves into a winning organization? Come on, Rod: When you gonna drop that new shit?

You see what I’m doing here take time

And while all of us are sitting on the edge of our seats while the likes of the Jets, Jaguars, Chargers, Falcons, Texans, and Lions all play a game of coaching musical chairs, it’s important to remember that this takes time. Remember when the Lions swung and missed on their first choice—Ken Whisenhunt—and ended up with Jim Caldwell instead back in 2014? Caldwell may not have been the answer to Detroit’s playoff enigma, but he wasn’t the disaster that Whisenhunt was in Tennessee.

Remember when the Lions jumped at Bob Quinn after just a couple other interviews? Remember how few coaching candidates the Lions interviewed before they got into business with Matt Patricia? It’s alright if the Lions don’t land your top choice. It’s alright if we’re left to wait this out for the month of January. What the Lions are trying to do here takes time.

Each week, we’ll be providing a Song of the Game to create a full-season playlist. You can listen to previous year’s soundtracks right here: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
