Tuesday open thread: Should the Lions prioritize Kenny Golladay or Marvin Jones?

Is this question as easy as it seems?

On Monday, I ranked the Detroit Lions’ 18 upcoming unrestricted free agents. Strolling through the comments, I saw something I found quite interesting. Some of you believed that Kenny Golladay, whom I ranked first on the list, should be jumped by Marvin Jones Jr. Several of you believed Jones was the more reliable receiver, and that the Lions should really focus their free agency efforts on getting him back over Golladay.

Given that Jones is about to turn 31, while Golladay is just 27, that surprised me quite a bit. So let’s see just how widespread that opinion is among Lions fans.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Who should take priority over the other in free agency: Kenny Golladay or Marvin Jones Jr.?

My answer: It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t necessary and either/or situation. The Lions could theoretically re-sign both (unlikely). Or they could move on from both (slightly more likely). But let’s play hypothetical here.

This isn’t particularly close to me. Jones earned himself a nice payday with how he finished the season, but if the Lions are splurging in free agency on a 31-year-old wide receiver at the tail-end of his career, then this new GM will be off to a terrible start. That’s not wise spending for a team that absolutely needs defensive help. By the time Detroit is competitive, we may be talking about Jones retiring. And that’s not even bringing up that it really seems like Jones wants to hit free agency and perhaps find a new home.

This feels like recency effect taking hold of some of the fans here. Golladay is bonafide No. 1 receiver who was in the conversation of the top-10 players at his position before his hip injury. Sure, missing 11 games in the season is concerning, and maybe that forces you to avoid a long-term deal, but that’s what makes the franchise tag so appealing in this case.

Golladay wants to be here, he has the ability to completely take over a game (remember that Falcons game he had?), and still has plenty of years in his game left.

It’s best for both the Lions and Jones to part ways, but Detroit should not let Golladay go. And if that means using the franchise tag for the first time since 2018 (Ezekiel Ansah), so be it.

Your turn.
