Wednesday open thread: Who’s your front-runner for the head coaching job?

Give us your best guess.

The Lions are making big moves now that the season is over when it comes to their search for a new regime to lead the franchise. This week alone, the team is expected to interview 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, combined with interviews already completed with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Lions interim head coach Darrell Bevell.

Those are in addition to a slew of GM candidate interviews announced Monday morning as well. Now that the regular season is over, lots of doors are opening in terms of availability to interview with the Lions.

Question of the day: Who is your front runner for the Lions head coaching job?

My answer: My favorite candidate right now is probably Brian Daboll.

I don’t think Daboll is the front runner for the decision makers in Allen Park, but he is mine. I know there has been a lot of talk about Robert Saleh’s ability to get the most out of his players, but I see a lot of the same from Daboll. Cole Beasley came just shy of 1,000 receiving yards this season at age 31. Stefon Diggs is the NFL’s receiving yardage leader, with 400 more receiving yards (1,535) than his best season in Minnesota (1,130 in 2019).

You can’t make the argument that Adam Thielen was taking away Diggs’ targets either, because Thielen only had 30 receptions in 2019 yet Diggs was able to outdo his 2019 performance significantly. This all comes with Josh freaking Allen running the show, a sophomore quarterback who we all ridiculed the Bills for taking to be their franchise guy.

Daboll certainly knows how to get the most out of his players if you ask me. It’s worth noting too that Daboll would almost certainly pluck a defensive staff from the Bills, one of the NFL’s fiercest defenses for the last several year. Your turn.
