Thursday open thread: Which NFL head coach opening is most attractive?

Which team has the most to offer?

As we sit here right now there are currently six openings for head coach positions:

Among those six teams vying for a new person to lead the football team, it not so easy to pick a clear and away winner. Even a team like the Jaguars who hold the number one pick (sure to be Trevor Lawrence) in the draft have a meddling owner who might interfere with a new coach’s plan.

There are only 32 head coach opportunities in the world, but that doesn’t make all of them equal. Here’s a nice breakdown of where each team stands as of now via former General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

There’s obviously more nuance to it than cap space and draft picks, but it starts to show a good barometer of what potential head coaches will be dealing with.

Add in other variables like current quarterbacks, division opponents, and potential for success and it starts to paint a clearer picture of which jobs look best to head coaching candidates.

So, today’s questions of the day is:

Which NFL head coach opening is most attractive?

My answer: Jacksonville Jaguars

The owner hovering in football operations gives me pause, but the total package is very appealing. Five picks in the first three rounds and the most cap space in the NFL to spend in free agency. That’s a pretty attractive landing spot for any potential head coach.

They don’t currently have a quarterback on the roster worth building around, but you can write it down that Trevor Lawrence will be the opening day started in the fall.

When you look around the division, there could be question marks all around too.

  • Does Tennesee regress if Arthur Smith gets a head coaching job?
  • Does Philip Rivers retire?
  • Can the Texans rebuild quickly around Deshaun Watson with few resources?

I wouldn’t be shocked if, in two years, the Jaguars are sitting comfortably atop the AFC South.

Your turn.
