The bye week is officially over the for the Detroit Lions as they had back to work on Monday in search of their first win of the season. On deck for them is a 4-3 Pittsburgh Steelers team that appears to be hitting their stride. They’ve won three in a row, taking down the Broncos, Seahawks and Browns in their path.
The Steelers are the “Monday Night Football” game this week, meaning the Lions will be catching them on a short week—a pretty significant advantage considering the Lions have had an extra week to prepare for this one.
However, with the Lions sitting as the only winless team, it’s no surprise that they are significant underdogs in this week’s game in Pittsburgh. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Steelers open the week as nine-point favorites over Detroit.
Of course, that line could change over the next few days. With the Steelers still left to play the Chicago Bears on Monday night, the perception of them could change drastically depending on their performance, and there’s always a risk of injury out there.
But history is not on the Lions’ side. They’ve lost five straight to the Steelers. In fact, Detroit’s last win in this series was the infamous Thanksgiving game in 1998. In that game, the official appeared to misunderstand Jerome Bettis’ coin toss call in overtime, leading to Detroit’s victory on the first possession of the extra quarter.
The Lions and Steelers played each other earlier this year in the preseason, and the results were not pretty. Ben Roethlisberger racked up 137 yards and two touchdowns on just three possessions before being pulled. Though the final score was 26-20 in Pittsburgh’s favor, the Steelers had a 20-0 lead at halftime. The preseason is just the preseason, though, so we’ll see if the Lions can come out of the bye and surprise some people this week.
