According to Ian Rapoport, Detroit Lions' tight end Darren Fells has asked to be waived from the team, and the Lions are granting that request.
Last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, Fells was inactive despite not dealing with an apparent injury. Prior to that game, Fells had been averaging over 22 snaps per game, so it was clear something was going on with Fells.
In the previous weeks, the Lions have temporarily promoted Brock Wright from the practice squad, and the rookie out of Notre Dame has played decently in 33 total snaps over two games. Wright currently has a 44.9 PFF grade, but he has performed well as a pass blocker (66.8 PFF grade). His performance against the Los Angeles Rams earned praise from offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, as well.
“You know, Brock did some good things last week,” Lynn said. “He’s a technician. He’s just getting an opportunity right now and he’s showing us what he can do.”
Wright has already been elevated from the practice squad twice—the maximum amount—so don’t be surprised to see him signed to the 53-man roster shortly. Detroit also has the option of using fullback Jason Cabinda as a tight end. Rookie Shane Zylstra, who was active for one game this season, is also available on the practice squad.
As for Fells, he is subject to the waiver wire. So his fate will be determined by who—if anyone—puts in a waiver claim for him.
With the Lions, Fells had just four catches in seven game appearances, but the value with his new team will be his blocking skills.
