Wednesday open thread: Who will be the best Lions cornerback in 2021?

The Lions have a handful of athletic corners who could blossom with the right coaching.

The Detroit Lions have a lot of high-potential bodies at cornerback. Tragically, they’ve played well below that potential under the Matt Patricia coaching staff. A new regime with highly regarded secondary coach Aaron Glenn now at the helm of the defense could significantly change that.

Question of the day: Who will be the best Lions corner in 2021?

My answer: Amani Oruwariye.

I think this is a lot closer than most people would imagine. Desmond Trufant has had some really flashy years, and while he’s a candidate for cap casualties right now with his high price tag, he could return to peak form in 2021 should he make it there with the Lions.

On the other hand, Jeff Okudah is a young up-and-comer who showed all of the right fundamentals at Ohio State and struggled in his rookie season, as cornerbacks typically do.

Heck, even Darryl Roberts has raw speed that could quietly make him a solid piece in this defense if he earns another contract in Detroit.

However, I think Amani Oruwariye remains the best candidate. Many cornerbacks truly hit their strides in year three, and that’s exactly where Amani will be. He showed flashes of CB1 ability amidst a year that solidified him as CB2 in spite of Matt Patricia’s coaching staff. Most notably, he’s notched three interceptions in the last two years—something that was a rarity for any Lions player in the past three seasons.

With an emerging role and two whole seasons under his belt, Oruwariye is poised to make a huge jump in 2021.

Your turn.
