Thursday open thread: Which positions should the Lions prioritize in free agency?

Is there a position the Lions must address in free agency?

NFL: Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals Michael Chow-USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions need help all over the field. There’s no doubt about that. But some positions are better options to fill in free agency than the draft.

For instance, I’m not sure a team should ever pay top dollar for another team's free-agent offensive lineman. It makes much more sense to draft and develop those types of players.

On the flip side, it can make sense to bring in an impact player on the defensive line or a top-level playmaker on offense. Outside of that, it starts getting murky on who to pay in free agency — at least at the top.

It does feel like this year more than any other will be a buyers market for teams. So today’s Question of the Day is:

What positions should the Lions prioritize in free agency?

My answer: Defensive line and secondary.

I’m not even concerned with the exact positions, but the Lions need a massive amount of help on the defensive line and in the secondary. If the Lions are unable to bring back Romeo Okwara, that need grows even bigger.

In the secondary, they desperately need a veteran player who can come in and help the young secondary group and push them to get better. Think of Rashean Mathis when he pushed Darius Slay to become a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

Your turn.
