Day one of free agency the legal tampering period the part of the NFL calendar where agents talk with teams and most free agency deals are formulated is in the books. And while the Detroit Lions may not have had the most active of days—they literally did not come to an agreement with another team’s player—there was plenty of news items to be talked about.

So on Monday night, we gathered the PODcast crew together for a Day 1 breakdown. Heading the news was the Lions’ decision to re-sign defensive end Romeo Okwara. His deal looks somewhat reasonable, but Detroit is taking a considerable risk given Okwara’s thin resume. But looking at the other deals some of the edge defenders got in free agency, did the Lions make the rightmove here?

Then we take a closer look at some of the players the Lions lost in free agency. While it’s important not to overreact to initial contract details, it is a little hard to understand why Jarrad Davis will be getting a one-year, $7 million deal with the New York Jets and why the Jacksonville Jaguars are handing Jamal Agnew a three-year, “up to” $21 million deal. We try to make sense of all that.

We also re-assess the Lions’ offensive line after the reported release of Joe Dahl, and speculate what the Lions will do at wide receiver after a slow market developed on Monday.
